Instructions for Authors
The instructions below are specifically directed at authors who wish to submit a manuscript to Advances in Physics. For general information, please visit our Author Services website.
Articles for this Journal are normally commissioned. In other instances, please send a synopsis to the Editorial Office in Oxford: Professor D. Email: d.sherrington1@physics.ox.ac.uk.Non-commissioned manuscripts are also considered on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Advances in Physics, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Advances in Physics incurs and their papers will not be published.
Contributions to Advances in Physics will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.
Manuscript submission
Advances in Physics publishes authoritative critical reviews by experts on topics of interest and importance to condensed matter physicists. The Perspectives section complements the regular reviews with occasional shorter, more provocative articles by leaders in their fields in order to stimulate debate in the community. Review articles and perspectives are specially commissioned from experts in their field.
Unsolicited review articles will occasionally be considered for publication in Advances in Physics. Such papers should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor David Sherrington for consideration.
Authors are encouraged to deliver manuscripts electronically. Electronic submissions should be sent as email attachments using a standard word processing program. If email submission is not possible, please send an electronic version on CD. Delivery via password-protected web-pages and FTP site is also encouraged for large files.
Exceptions are made for certain Governments' employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.
Reprints
There are no page charges to individuals or institutions.
Manuscript preparation
1. General guidelines
- Papers are usually commissioned by the Editors of Advances in Physics; in other instances, please send a synopsis to the Editorial Office in Oxford at d.sherrington1@physics.ox.ac.uk
- Papers are accepted only in English. British English or American English spelling and punctuation is acceptable, but should be consistent throughout the article.
- A typical review article will be between 70-150 journal pages, with a word-equivalence of 500 words per page. Perspectives are always commissioned and are typically in the order of 25 pages. Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length.
- Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
- For publication, manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). For consideration by the Editor and referees prior to publication, a compiled version with text-embedded figures, tables and captions would also be appreciated.
- Abstracts of up to 200 words are required for all papers.
- Each paper should have three to six keywords.
- Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
- All papers should include the names of all authors as they wish them to appear in print and all affiliations.
- One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author for whom an email address, telephone and fax numbers must be provided, with any changes advised to the Editorial and Publication offices.
- A postal address is also required in order to receive a complimentary copy of the Journal upon publication; this should be provided on a cover page.
- Biographical notes on contributors are not required for this journal.
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
- Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
- When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or ™.

3. Figures
- It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
- For the purposes of peer review figures, tables and captions should preferably be placed within the text. However, in addition all figures, tables, captions and a text file should be provided as separate files to the text to ensure prompt publication. Source files will be required for any PDFs provided.
- Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript).
- All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
- The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
4. Colour
The use of colour in print is strictly limited and will only be permitted where it is essential for clarity and not purely cosmetic or of marginal advantage. The final decision of whether colour is required is at the discretion of the Academic Editor. Authors have the option to cover the costs of colour pages for any figure(s) if the annual budget has been reached. All colour figures will be published in colour online.
Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the editors.
6. Supplementary online material
Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication. These are subject to the Editor's approval before they can be posted online and must follow the reproduction of copyright material instructions above.
